Rather than wait until I get home to post (what will probably be) 1000s of photos, I want to try and do a daily photo diary blog post, in addition to my vlogs. I have absolutely fallen in love with NYC and after just one full day here I feel like I have seen so much.
Although I do really want to do the tourist stuff, this is probably a once in a life time trip so I want to make sure I see the iconic stuff, but I also really want to see New York from a New Yorkers perspective too. I want to go off grid and find the cute little independent cafes and shops. I want to find all the colourful walls and explore the neighbourhoods.
Yesterday, we started out by walking from our AirBnB in Lower East Side, to find some brunch. We discovered a super cute little juice bar and cafe called The Butchers Daughter. I went for my standard brunch choice of avocado and eggs, but it came with a kinda tomato hash, the whole thing was delicious. We even got to sit outside in the glorious sunshine, it was fresh but you’d never guess it was December!
From there we walked through China Town down under the Brooklyn Bridge to the Staten Island Ferry. So many guys tried to get us on a $30 tour boat, but we knew the ferry was free so we decided to jump on that instead. I’m sure the tours around the island are great but we really just wanted to see the view of the city from the water and the ferry was perfect for that. We had a great view of the statue of liberty from the boat too. The skies were the perfect blue, the sun was shining and it was a great day for a boat ride.
We didn’t stay on Staten Island for long as our friends had to catch their flight back yesterday evening so we had a little wonder and then headed back to the city. We jumped in a yellow cab and headed to near where the guys were staying so the could be close enough to grab their stuff before heading to the airport. We were all starving by this point, so we stopped in Union Square for some lunch/dinner at TGI Fridays before having a wonder around the Christmas Market.
We said our good byes to our friends as they headed off in their Uber taxi and we took a stroll on to Times Square since we were half way there. It was crazy busy and honestly not what I was expecting at all. I’m not really sure what I was expecting really but it was all so bright and packed with people. It was a really great experience to have been there and seen it in real life but I wasn’t blown away by it. It’s insane how bright it is though, you can see the lights of time square from blocks away!
I was mostly super excited by Macy’s at Christmas, what a thing to behold!! “Believe” they say, oh Macy’s I do! I’ve never seen anything like it, it was truly beautiful! We only had a little wonder around, actually just so Brad could use their restroom but I hope to go back there in the week to have a proper look around.
We must have walked miles yet I didn’t mind one bit (unusually!) and one day felt like three. I can’t believe we still have five days left. I’m so excited to see what the rest of the week brings and all the things we still have to see.
If you’d like to watch the video, I’m vlogging everyday so you can join me on my trip!
