I’m sure you will know by now, but I wanted to document this exciting turning point in my life and also share some extra gossip for those that are interested in my engagement story. I have also told my story in a video below if you want to just watch me tell you about it instead of reading all about it. (You’ll need to watch it to find out what I really think of the ring!)
It really has been a crazy busy few weeks with one big huge cherry on top of it all, before coming back down to earth to let it all sink in! I can’t believe we’re in September already, throughout August, I’ve been to Edinburgh to celebrate my bestie’s birthday at Edinburgh Fringe. I’ve planned my #tropicalvibesparty and turned 30, had a surprise trip to Cornwall and got engaged. Wow, what a month!
At my party last weekend, everyone was asking what I’d be doing on my actual birthday on the Tuesday. I hadn’t really given it much thought, the party was my celebration and I just assumed we’d do something quiet and local during the week. However, Brad had other ideas! He mentioned we would be busy, but again, I just assumed that we would do something during the day. It wasn’t until Monday evening that he told me I’d need to pack a bag for a night away, including something nice to wear for the evening and to wear something comfortable for the car journey.
To be honest, I’m not really big on surprises because I’m a complete control freak. So I was immediately inquisitive, trying to probe him for answers, but he was giving nothing away. He did give me a few clues, he said I’d know it when we were three minutes away. He said we’d never stayed there before and that we had a bit of a car journey. I wasn’t sure if he was just trying to throw me off the scent though.
It had crossed my mind that he may have been taking me to Bournemouth to see Grandma because she couldn’t make my party, but that didn’t add up with the clues. So I was racking my brain as to other places he may have thought of. Something in the back of my mind was telling me, Lamorna Cove Hotel. A place we had stumbled across about five years ago, on another trip to Penzance in the early years of our relationship. It had always been a place in the back of my mind that I was saving for a special occasion so I thought that maybe he had thought the same. However, I kept my thoughts to myself and didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to get my hopes up incase he’d gone more low key and booked a campsite or something.
The morning of my birthday we were getting ready to get in the car and Brad accidentally let the cat out the bag that we were going to Cornwall. That confirmed my suspicions, although I still kept quiet.
As we got further and further in to cornwall, Brad said there was a place he wanted to stop for lunch in Port Isaac. Unfortunately he’d forgotten it was still summer holidays and hadn’t realised how busy it was so we couldn’t go to Outlaws fish restaurant like he’d hoped. That didn’t matter though as we still had a lovely lunch, of local mussels for me and a crab sandwich for him, at The Mote. I’d never been to Port Issac before and it was so beautiful so of course I took a lot of photos, but we didn’t stay long, before we jumped back in the car.
Brad said we were still an hour from our destination, although there was a lot of traffic so it took much longer. I slept a lot in the car and woke up just as we were getting in to Penzance. By that point I was pretty certain my guess was correct but as we past a few signs for Lamorna, I pretended not to notice and he tried to throw me off the scent by going the scenic route.
We left Bristol about 11am, and after our lunch stop off and the traffic it was about 6pm by the time we got to the hotel. I was excited but also I was getting hungry and thirsty for a cider. Before we got out the car, Brad warned me that the hotel wasn’t the same as it was when we first saw it all those years ago. We found out later in the evening that the previous owner had gone bankrupt and it was under new management but it had been empty for a year, so it no longer had the fancy restaurant and spa that we’d originally seen. It was still a really nice place to go for my birthday but he said it did take the edge of it how special we’d remembered it to be.
After we’d found our room, Brad was insistent that before we went for dinner that we have a walk down to the cove, I somewhat reluctantly obliged. It had crossed my mind that maybe this would be it, I had joked with my bestie before we left that he had a lot to live up to after our trip to New York for my birthday last year. So I just followed all his instruction and didn’t kick up any fuss so as not to ruin any plans he may have had.
The cove was just a short walk from the hotel. There’s not a lot there, a few houses and a cafe and a quay that the end of, had been torn down by a storm back in 2014. We had a little wander down and everything look pretty closed up, I was just like, “Yup this is nice, but can we go back and feed me now” oblivious to the fact Brad was trying to find the place he was going to ask me those four little words!
He found some steps down to the quay wall, immediately I spotted the ‘OUT OF BOUNDS DUE TO STORM DAMAGE – Enter at your own risk’ sign. I was like, “why would you take me down there!!??” He continued down the steps as I gingerly approached them trying not to trip on my over sized baggy trousers. As I turned the corner, there he was, down on one knee on the steps. All I heard was “I thought it was about time….” and I heard no more through the tears and laughter that I couldn’t hold back. He got back up and I said that I hadn’t heard him actually ask me so I made him get back down and wait for my answer!
Of course I’d hoped, but I’d hoped on many special occasions over the last 7 years, so I never thought it would actually happen. So when he actually found the moment to do it I was so overwhelmed with his PDA. Brad’s not really one for expressing his emotion so I was a wash of emotion that I could process for some time. I’m not usually short of words, but aside from my YES I didn’t know what else to say! I think I was just so in shock!
It’s all sunk in now and that all happened on the Tuesday, by Friday night we’d practically planned the whole thing, written the guest list, confirmed bridesmaids and got a quote for the venue! I told you I’m a control freak!
You should probably watch the video to find out what I thought of the ring!
I’m hoping to document the whole process in video and blog form too so welcome to my new series “wedding gossip”. We hopefully have a year to plan it all and it’ll come in waves but I’m really looking forward to documenting the process to be able to look back in many years to come.
