I have been searching for the perfect workspace in our house since we moved in three years ago. I have tried using the dinky spare room, which worked for a while but then I started sharing it with Brad and it got all boy looking and ended up cluttered and a dumping ground when I no longer used it, it’s now my walk in closet!
I have tried to set up a space in our bedroom to try and confine my work area, but then there just wasn’t enough space to move and I didn’t like being up stairs all day (with my babies down stairs). I was also drawn to the sofa a lot as I love to have the day time morning TV on in the background. I know it’s a bad habit but I learn a lot from Holly and Phil!
I have my shed office in the summer, which I do use a lot when the weather justifies, but this year I think that lasted about four weeks before it was time to come inside again. The pull of the living room is strong and low and behold I ended up back on the sofa, and trust me, these sofas (although they look nice) aren’t that comfy to sit on all day. And sometimes it is better just to be at a desk when you need to be focused and have papers, notebooks, pens and stuff to hand.
So I decided just to set up my desk in one of the alcoves in the living room. It’s my fav room in the house, it’s already super colourful and creative but adding this space just makes it feel complete now. I have everything I need in one space, my workspace, my chill out space (which is basically the same thing since I love to work… in my chill out space!!) I have my puggy at my side all day, and Logan when they’re both chilling out, otherwise it can become chaos when they just want to play and I have work to do. And I can have my This Morning on the TV in the background (I use it instead of the radio) so I can tune in and out when something sparks my attention. Although I do turn it off when I have a lot of writing to do as I need silence for that.
I designed a lot of the wall art myself, you can find it in the shop, but to find out where I got everything else from, I have created a comprehensive (and clickable) list of my favourite places to buy inspirational wall art, office equipment and everything else you can see here. You can sign up below to reveal the list, it’s even in a handy (and pretty) PDF for you to save! I’d love you to join the mermaid gossip, it’s easy to opt out of if you’re not happy and it’s free for the first month anyway, but each week I will be creating lots of useful downloads for you exclusive to the gossip! You also get exclusive discounts to my shop and there lots of exciting things in the pipeline too.
