Mermaid Tales // Make Sunday Special

Good Afternoon Beautiful! Cor, is it Monday already? I hope your having a good day so far! I have been down the gym for legs bums and tums to try and start the week as mean to go on. I don’t really even feel like I have had a weekend. I was working in wales on Friday night with the Photo Booth, and then in Swindon on Saturday night. And in between that, I spent the day sorting and updating all the prop boxes. I do love my “job” (It never feels like a real job!) but it really was non stop Friday and Saturday. So I made sure I was able to step away from work and at least have one day off on Sunday.

It was the last day of Bristol’s Make Sunday Special, which is an event put on through the summer on the first Sunday of each month, where a few selected roads in Central Bristol are closed and lots of activities are put on in the streets instead, in a bid to reduce the traffic in the city centre. We have been meaning to go all summer and some how we have managed to get to the end of summer without going, so with the summer weather having a second wind, we thought it was a great day to spend the day mooching around with the pooches.

There was a pink brass band playing to greet us as soon as we hit Corn Street where the road closures begin, a collection of sofas provided by Emmaus, surrounding a drawing station for the kids, and a giant chess board. The streets full of stalls, street food and artisans. There were mimes, hula hooping, a bike service station and so much more. We meandered the streets observing the colourful madness that had transcended on the town. Occasionally being stopped by passers by, to of course give Logan a ‘smooth’ as they say here in Bristol (a stroke to you and I!). We wondered down to the harbour and sat and had tea (and a pint for Brad) in No.1 Harbourside, and then on to a new restaurant opened up recently, Spitfire, for some food. We wandered on a little bit further before we caught the ferry back to the centre to head home. We were all pretty pooped after all that walking so spent the rest of the afternoon catching up with The X Factor repeats – So rock n roll!!

DIY Tutorial // How To Dye Your Hair Pink

I have been dying my hair for many years now, in fact I haven’t seen my natural colour since I was about 13 (apart from those pesky roots that keep coming through!). Over the years I have learned the best way to do things and what not to do. Ie: don’t use five strong peroxides on your hair in one weekend when trying to dye your hair from black to blonde! Yup, I did that at about aged 14/15 and my hair turned in to a chewing gum esq state. BE WARNED! After not learning my lesson, it was at the age of 18 that my hair was in such a bad condition I had to have it cut to above my shoulders and go back to a colour not far off my natural colour for a few to years to repair my hair.

Whilst we were away last week, we got rained on quite a bit, that combined with swimming in the sea, all that salty water completely faded my hair out and went a kind of silvery blonde with hints of minty green, randomly. So when I got back, I decided it was a good time to bleach my roots and try something a bit different, I quite liked the silvery blonde that was more predominant framing my face, it just needed a bit of fixing up.

How To Dye Your Hair Pink

The base in which you start with will will impact the end result, and if you want a really pastel pink, you will need to have as netural base as possible. To start with you will need to bleach your hair as instructed on the packet. It has taken me a long time to get my hair so white blonde to be able to take my pastel shade of blonde, and I have gradually lightened it, and the shade of pink, over time so please don’t try and achieve this if your a newbie, pastel hair is an investment you will need to give a lot of time to. If your a first time home bleacher, take it easy and go very carefully. I AM NOT A HAIRDRESSER OR A PROFESSIONAL! (I can’t be held responsible for any damages so make sure you read all the instructions!!!!!!!!)

You will need:

I apply the bleach directly to my roots using the brush provided. I use the sectioning technique and section my hair in to fifths. Starting with my fringe (mostly because I knew I wanted to keep it blonde and it would need the longest development time). I then do the two front sections, from my crown to my ears. I then part the remaining back section and work from my crown to my neck. I had to use one and half packets just to do the first few inches from the root because I have a lot of hair (and because I am quite liberal with it). Please be aware if you also have a lot of hair or you are doing the full lengths you will need two packs. Please read the label to find out the recommended coverage.

When dying my roots, they ALWAYS go a little ginger because my natural colour is quite a dark mousey brown. Instead of leaving the mixture on to a damaging state, I use lots and lots of toner. The good thing about the bleach I have featured here, it already comes with a platinum toner, which is basically a lilac toned conditioner.

As you can see it was preeeetty yellow at the roots, so I used a covering of toner all over and then used the touch of silver shampoo and conditioner which works the same, and knocks out any brassy tones and gives you a whiter/more silvery blonde. I gave my hair a double shampoo and condition to get it to this stage.

To mix up the colour, it very much depends how dark/light a shade you want to achieve. I used half the bottle of conditioner in a separate pot that I could close and keep if there was any left over. A good tip is also to use an old conditioner bottle, but make sure you can see through the plastic to see what the shade is when you mix. Make sure you use a white conditioner too so you can get an accurate gauge of the shade. I then added two parts pink to one part purple, after mixing, I then added more pink until I was happy with the shade. You want the colour of the mixture to be about twice the shade you will want the end result.

It is always best to apply your chosen colour to dry hair as it’s more porous and will absorb the colour better. So I dried my hair off. My fringe (which I wanted to keep blonde) was still looking a bit brassy, so before I started applying the pink dye, I applied more platinum toner and left it on whilst I applied the pink to the back section. Be warned the toner does have purple tones in it and does essentially work like a dye if you leave it long enough, I was perfectly happy to have a slight lilac tinge to my front section but don’t leave it too long if you just want a white blonde.

I then applied my three parts pink and one part purple mixture from the root two thirds of the way down the length of my hair. Along with my blonde fringe, I also wanted a bit of an ombre style with silvery blonde tips so after putting the colour mixture through the roots for about four inches, I pulled it through the rest by twirling my hair in sections and working the colour down.

It’s best to leave the colour on for as long as you can to achieve a long lasting colour, I have heard some people even leave it over night, but I left mine for about an hour. Since it’s just a conditioner mix, it won’t harm your hair and actually does the opposite.

You can apply the colour in any creative way you see fit, the point of having a funky colour in your hair is to have fun with it. Why not tweet me your colour hair! Tuesday Treasures // Trés Cool Watercolour

After our week away last week was filled with wind and rain with just a couple of days sunshine, one would be forgiven in to thinking autumn has arrived (Sssh, I am a little pleased by this- but not by the rain, just the slightly dropping temperature!) but today the sun shone in Bristol again to welcome us home, thank you sun. None the less my mind is no longer focusing on pastel hues and my eye is being drawn to more autumnal shades and black is definitely a factor again. I popped to town last week with my best friend and fellow bridemaids to go bridesmaid dress shopping/browsing, and we accidentally fell in to Primark and H&M (Haul video coming to my You Tube Channel very soon). I was actually very controlled with my spending (I am trying to be more sensible since my spending got a little obsessive) and only purchased a few things to create just the one complete outfit.

I found this skirt featured here in the sale rack in Primark and it was the only one left as far as I could see and luckily for me in was in my size. I love a good full circle midi skirt, and this floral print scream Ted Baker at me (I am a little Ted obsessed). It looks like a very luxurious watercolour print skirt and I fell in love, it even has red tones running through the flowers and I never wear red but the turquoise and pinks were a winner. Whilst I was in there, I was actually looking for a particular pastel fake fur coat that I saw recently in Company magazine but I think I was too ahead of the game as usual as they hadn’t had it in yet, so instead I stumbled across this leather jacket with gold zip detail. I have wanted a “leather” jacket for ages but I am pretty fussy about the style and wanted one with the right style of collar (and price tag of course) and I adore this one. It is the most expensive thing I have ever bought in Primark at £25, but the “leather” is so soft and the fit around my waist is perfect.

I didn’t plan on buying anything in H&M, as I rarely go in there because I have never been a massive fan.. But who knew the Bristol H&M was on three floors and offered such a selection of ranges. They literally had a section for all stereo types including sports luxe, hipster prints, pretty pastels and girly grunge. I did spy quite a few things that took my fancy but when I saw this “leather” Trés Cool slogan bag which is perfect size for laptop, iPad and other important things, I knew it would complete my outfit I was creating. Topped off nicely with this black and gold studded/spiked statement necklace (was in the sale, here’s a similar, less studded version) to add to my growing collection.

Mermaid Tales // A Lovely Birthday Camping Holiday in Dorset

Happy 1st September to you! Pinch and a punch first of the month. Over on Fishee designs blog, you may have been used to my Monday Musings which gave me a place to share with you, what I have been up to over the weekend and an update on life in general. I decided with the change of the blog it was time to give it a refresh and a title which was more apt, and more me, so welcome to mermaid tales. The principle is essentially the same it just has a new name. Mermaid Tales :: A Lovely Birthday Camping Holiday in Dorset Photo by Mermaid Gossip If you follow me on Instagram and had a cheeky read of my Things I Love Thursday, you will have seen I was away camping last week with my little family in Bridport. We have had a lovely time away and I definitely needed the holiday, as always after a little break i am feeling inspired and looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow. Although I wish I could stay by the coast forever, it really will always feel like home to me. Mermaid Tales :: A Lovely Birthday Camping Holiday in Dorset Photo by Mermaid Gossip We have been pretty lucky with the weather considering the forecast and have been able to get out everyday and explore the local towns without too much rain. We have been to Weymouth, Portland Bay, Lyme Regis, Seaton, Swanage, Christchurch, Beer, Upwey and driven through lots of beautifully quaint English villages along the way. Mermaid Tales :: A Lovely Birthday Camping Holiday in Dorset Photo by Mermaid Gossip My highlights have been walking the 2.5miles from our tent, across the coastal path on the only day of blue skies (nope didn’t moan a bit going up those incredibly steep cliff paths getting hot and sweaty at all!) to sit in the gorgeous sunshine, drinking cider and eating lovely food, at the Anchor Inn in Seatown. Then walking back along the (seemingly never ending) rocky coast and swimming in the sea in all my clothes with Logan while Brad and Puggy sat and watched. On a random detour back from a day out in Dorchester, we discovered a lovely art gallery in Upwey where I fell in love with the shell necklaces by Cath Coffin. On my birthday we drove over the rolling hills with a sea view and through the villages to try and find it again because Brad wanted to treat me to a beautiful handcrafted silver clam shell necklace as my gift. I truly love it and it’s the first piece of jewellery he has bought me (in five years..! Shocking I know.. ) so I will treasure it forever, it’s so special to me. Mermaid Tales :: A Lovely Birthday Camping Holiday in Dorset Photo by Mermaid Gossip My favourite place we have been is walking around Lyme Regis whilst the Folk Festival was on. It’s the St Ives of Dorset with quaint lanes, fisherman’s cottages and cute shops and bakeries. I bought myself a beautiful blue opalite ring in the Coombe Street Gallery with the money mum gave me for my birthday. I love opals and although it is synthetic, I have been looking for one in my finger size for ages and it seemed like the perfect time to treat myself when I saw it glittering in the window. I can’t believe how much attention Logan has received this week, everywhere we have been people have been stopping us to ask what breed he is and congratulating us on such a beautiful dog, he’s been the star of the show, poor Puggy has been out shone. Plus, since we picked up an anti pull harness in Swanage from a very helpful local pet shop, the stress of walking with him has been completely eliminated and I feel like we have bonded again, I’m looking forward to being able to take both Puggy and Logan out for autumn walks when we get back. We have indulged in so much food and consumed a fair few pints of ale and cider this week and are both feeling pretty satisfied but we are looking forward to getting back on the healthy eating plan. To be fair we have walked so many miles this week that I hope it hasn’t had too bigger impact on the scales, but if you can’t indulge on holiday when can you! Back to work tomorrow!

Things I Love Thursday // Family Camping

This week we have been camping at Highlands End Holiday Park in Bridport with my little family, Brad, Logan and Puggy. We arrived to our coastal cliff side campsite in torrential rain and winds on Monday afternoon, and were met with several other tents already ruin by the elements. Brad and I looked at each other and sarcastically and toyed with the idea of turning around and heading home! But instead we took a deep breath, took the dogs along the pebbly beach for a walk in the rain and prepared our plan of action for erecting the tent in the blustery weather. Luckily by the time we had walked just a short way along the beach, the horizon was looking a lot clearer and we decided to make the most of the window of clear skies and get the tent up, quick style. No longer than we had put the last tent peg in had the heavens heavens opened again.

IMG_3824.JPG

Our first night was needless to say a restless one with the tent being battered solidly for the entire night, we barely got a wink of sleep, but luckily that was the worst of it and since then we have had some drizzle on and off but the nights have been quiet which means we have had a good nights sleep ready for lots of walking in the day.

Things I Love Thursday

Starting the holiday off with a weekend full of friends fun and filth with Fenner, (my best friend the bride) Helen and Dani (my fellow bridesmaids) for bridesmaid dress shopping in Bristol.

Having a week off with the family with limited social media access (by choice!)

Walking with the dogs, on the beach, through the forest around the Dorset towns.

Starting on Orange is the New Black, were hooked. I have been reluctant to start since I know what I’m like on binge watching on Netflix when I get hooked but as we have the week of it seemed the perfect time.

Meeting up with Mum and Grandma and getting some lovely birthday gifts.

Spending last night with our yearly holiday buddies Kat and Nick for WAY too much Chinese and sofies (sofa selfies, obvs!)

Reconnecting with my DSLR taking lots of photos with Brad and the pooches. Can’t wait to share with you next week.

The fact the weather has been kind to us considering the forecast.

Swimming in the lush indoor swimming pool here in Bridport.

I posted this Mermaid post a year ago, it came up on my timehop app, maybe there is just mermaid in the air this time of year.
